Association of epistaxis with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease
The Laryngoscope Mar 23, 2019
Kunz SM, et al. - In this case-control cohort study, researchers examined the connection between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and epistaxis. Patients from between December 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017 from the tertiary-care Ear, Nose, and Throat Department at the University Hospital of Zurich were included. For this investigation, cardiovascular risk profiles were assessed in a group of 41 patients presenting with epistaxis, and a group of 41 matched controls, concentrating on the carotid intima-media thickness as a surrogate parameter for atherosclerosis. It has been shown that the onset of severe epistaxis is closely linked with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease prevalence. Patients affected by epistaxis should, therefore, be considered at an elevated cardiovascular risk, indicating the need for further appropriate medical evaluation and preventive measures.
