Association of early palliative care use with survival and place of death among patients with advanced lung cancer receiving care in the Veterans Health Administration
JAMA Oncology Sep 27, 2019
Sullivan DR, Chan B, Lapidus JA, et al. - Researchers examined the influence of early palliative care on the survival of patients with advanced lung cancer. They conducted a cohort study of 23,154 patients with advanced lung cancer in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system. A specialist-delivered palliative care encounter received after lung cancer diagnosis defined palliative care. Outcomes revealed an association of palliative care with a survival benefit. They identified the timing of the receipt of palliative care as significant; increased survival was observed in correlation with palliative care received 31 to 365 days after diagnosis. Findings thereby support considering palliative care as a complementary approach to disease-modifying therapy in patients with advanced lung cancer.
