Association of diabetes mellitus with clinical outcomes in patients with different coronary artery stenosis
Cardiovascular Diabetology Oct 29, 2021
Zhang HW, Jin JL, Cao YX, et al. - A worse outcome was experienced by diabetic patients with intermediate coronary artery stenosis (ICAS) which was comparable to patients suffering from severe coronary artery stenosis (SCAS) alone.
This study involved 10,940 patients who were hospitalized due to angina-like chest pain, and were divided into non-obstructive coronary artery stenosis (CAS) (NOCAS, < 50% stenosis), intermediate CAS (50–69% stenosis), and severe CAS (70–100% stenosis) subgroups.
Participants were further split into six groups: NOCAS with diabetes mellitus (DM) and non-DM, ICAS with DM and non-DM, and SCAS with DM and non-DM.
A higher incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events was observed in those with ICAS or SCAS when patients coexisted with DM.
Increased risk of events was observed in patients with ICAS and DM, SCAS and non-DM, SCAS and DM [adjusted hazard ratio: 1.709, 1.911, 2.053] vs those with NOCAS and non-DM.
