Association of diabetes mellitus on cardiac remodeling, quality of life, and clinical outcomes in heart failure with reduced and preserved ejection fraction
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 29, 2019
Yap J, Tay WT, Katherine Teng TH, et al. - Researchers compared the links between diabetes mellitus and cardiac remodeling, quality of life, and clinical outcomes, based on heart failure (HF) phenotype in the prospective Asian Sudden Cardiac Death in Heart Failure Registry. Participants were HF patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus and community-based controls without HF. Echocardiographic parameters, quality of life (evaluated by the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire), and outcomes (1-year all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and HF hospitalization) were compared. Findings revealed the association of type 2 diabetes mellitus with smaller left ventricular volumes, higher mitral E/e′ ratio, poorer quality of life, and worse outcomes in HF and preserved ejection fraction and HF with reduced ejection fraction, with various differences perceived between HF phenotypes.
