Association of depressive symptoms and risk of knee pain: The moderating effect of gender

BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Jul 30, 2021

Hu H, Liu W, Liu Y, et al. - Researchers examined the correlation between depressive symptoms and subsequent knee pain based on a four-wave (Wave 1 in 2010–2011, Wave 2 in 2013, Wave 3 in 2015, and Wave 4 in 2018) longitudinal study among middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults. In addition, they investigated if and how this association is influenced by gender. Recruitment and follow-up of 17,708 participants was done in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). For all the outcomes, the median follow-up period was 7 years. Findings revealed an independent association of depressive symptoms with an excess risk of knee pain. This association was noted to be stronger for males than females among middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults.
