Association of demographic and program factors with American board of surgery qualifying and certifying examinations pass rates
JAMA Jan 23, 2020
Yeo HL, et al. - This study was intended to analyze whether trainee sociodemographic factors are associated with board passage rates. Researchers designed a national and multi-institutional prospective observational cohort study to survey of 1048 categorical general surgery trainees starting in 2007-2008. Trainees of Hispanic ethnicity were more likely to not attempt either of the board examinations (qualifying and certifying examinations), and examinees who were married with children were more likely to fail the examinations in this study of 662 participants. They found an adverse effect based on sociodemographic factors on passing the board certification examinations that need further exploration in a national sample of trainees.
