Association of CRP and vitamin D deficiency with cardiovascular disease: A nationwide cross-sectional study from NHANES 2007-2008
Clinical Cardiology Apr 30, 2019
Li Q, et al. - Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2007–2008), researchers investigated the association of C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in this cross-sectional analysis including 3,848 participants. Findings revealed the association of both high CRP and low 25(OH)D levels with CVD. A higher probability of having CVD was observed in subjects with high CRP levels and severe vitamin D deficiency vs those with neither risk factor. Only the high CRP group demonstrated a significant positive link between vitamin D level and CVD in stratified analysis. Overall, vitamin D status assessment, or vitamin D supplement may be of significance, in particular, for subjects with high CRP levels.
