Association of coworker reports about unprofessional behavior by surgeons with surgical complications in their patients

JAMA Jun 25, 2019

Cooper WO, et al. - Through a cohort study of 13,653 patients who underwent surgery performed by 202 surgeons, the researchers examined the hypothesis that patients of surgeons with higher numbers of reports from coworkers about unprofessional behaviors are at greater risk for postoperative complications in comparison to the patients whose surgeons produced lesser coworker reports. Eight hundred and twenty-five surgical and 1,070 medical complications were noted. Patients whose surgeons had more coworkers more likely experienced a surgical complication or any medical complication hence, reporting of unprofessional behavior in the 36 months. Hence, this study emphasizes to address the surgeons whose behavior toward other medical professionals could elevate patients’ risk for adverse outcomes and should be looked after too by the organizations involved in assuring optimal patient outcomes.
