Association of COVID-19 vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with cancer: A US nationwide veterans affairs study
JAMA Dec 08, 2021
Wu JTY, La J, Branch-Elliman W, et al. - Researchers examined the association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 infections in patients with cancer.
Retrospective, multicenter, nationwide cohort study of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and infection among US Veterans Affairs patients from December 15, 2020, to May 4, 2021.
Among a total of 184,485 patients meeting eligibility criteria, 113,796 were vaccinated.
Starting 14 days after the second dose, a proxy measure for effectiveness of the vaccine was 58%.
Starting 14 days after the second dose, patients who had not received systemic therapy within the 6 months prior to vaccination had an effectiveness measure of 85% and those receiving hormonal treatment had an effectiveness measure of 76%.
Overall patients with cancer were noted to have lower infection rates in correlation with receiving SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, this was especially evident in those not receiving current systemic therapy and those receiving hormonal treatment.
