Association of COVID-19 vaccination and facial nerve palsy: A case-control study

JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Jun 28, 2021

Shemer A, Pras E, Einan-Lifshitz A, et al. - This case-control study was undertaken to determine if the BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine is correlated with an increased risk of acute-onset peripheral facial nerve (Bell) palsy. This investigation was conducted at the emergency department of a tertiary referral center in central Israel from January 1 to February 28, 2021. Patients admitted for facial nerve palsy were matched with control patients admitted for other reasons in terms of age, gender, and date of admission. During the study period, 37 patients were admitted for facial nerve palsy, 22 (59.5%) of whom were male, with a mean (SD) age of 50.9 (20.2) years. There was no correlation between acute facial nerve palsy and recent vaccination with the BNT162b2 vaccine. Furthermore, despite rapid and widespread vaccination of the population, the volume of admissions for facial nerve palsy was comparable to the same period in previous years.
