Association of corticosteroid treatment with outcomes in adult patients with sepsis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Internal Medicine Jan 04, 2019
Fang F, et al. - Researchers tested the safety and effectiveness of corticosteroids in this systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 randomized clinical trials involving 9564 patients with sepsis. Findings suggested an association of corticosteroid use with reduced 28-day mortality and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality and in-hospital mortality. They found that corticosteroids were correlated significantly with increased shock reversal at day 7 and vasopressor-free days and with ICU length of stay, the sequential organ failure assessment score at day 7, and time to resolution of shock. The use of corticosteroids was however related to an increased risk of hyperglycemia and hypernatremia.
