Association of constellations of parental risk with children’s subsequent anxiety and depression: Findings from a HUNT Survey and Health Registry Study
JAMA Pediatrics Mar 15, 2019
Lund IO, et al. - In this study of linked HUNT survey data and health registry data including 8,773 children from 6,696 two-parent families, researchers identified constellations of early parental risk characterized by variations in drinking, mental health, and education in both parents and investigated their prospective associations with children’s contact with the health care system for anxiety and/or depression (ie, diagnoses or treatment). According to this prospective analysis, studies aimed at understanding prospective parental drinking associations with the mental health of children need to consider additional risk factors in combination with each other as well as parental behaviors and features below clinically defined levels. Even seemingly innocuous characteristics, when accumulated at a family level, contributed to significant increases in children's risk of anxiety and/or depression, potentially translating into poorer outcomes for many young people.
