Association of comorbid serious mental illness diagnosis with 30-day medical and surgical readmissions
JAMA Jan 06, 2019
Germack HD, et al. – Given that patients with serious mental illness (SMI; eg, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression) experience challenges in psychological and social functioning that often co-occur with physical health conditions, researchers compared nationwide medical and surgical readmission rates in patients with and without SMI. Risk-adjusted 30-day readmissions are an important indicator of quality care used by Medicare & Medicaid Services Centers to guide performance pay. Research thus analyzed hospital and state data and found that medical and surgical readmission rates might be higher for patients with SMI vs those without SMI. The differences in nationwide estimates of 30-day all-cause readmissions, however, are unknown.
