Association of comorbid mood and anxiety disorders with autism spectrum disorder
JAMA Dec 13, 2019
Kirsch AC, Huebner ARS, Mehta SQ, et al. - In this population-based birth cohort study of 31,220 people born in Olmsted County, Minnesota, from January 1, 1976, to December 31, 2000, researchers investigated whether people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were at higher risk for comorbid diagnoses of depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. In total, 1,014 individuals with ASD and 2,028 referents took part in the study. In comparison with age- and gender-matched referents, individuals with ASD were significantly more inclined to have clinically diagnosed bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety. Thus, this study strengthens the significance of early, ongoing surveillance and targeted treatments to discuss the psychiatric requirements of people with ASD.
