Association of coming out as lesbian, gay, and bisexual+ and risk of cigarette smoking in a nationally representative sample of youth and young adults
JAMA Pediatrics Jan 07, 2021
Harlow AF, Lundberg D, Raifman JR, et al. - Utilizing data from the nationally representative Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study, experts aspired to explore whether young people who change their sexual identity have a higher risk of cigarette smoking initiation and current smoking vs those with consistent sexual identities. The sample consisted of 7,843 youth and young adults. Changing sexual identity over follow-up was linked to smoking initiation and current smoking relative to consistently heterosexual identities. Among participants coming out as bisexual or reporting other changes in their identity to/from being bisexual, the risk associated with changing sexual identities was concentrated. More research is required on mechanisms underlying the link between changing sexual identity and smoking initiation to inform tailored prevention programs and tobacco regulations.
