Association of cognitive impairment and elderly mortality: Differences between two cohorts ascertained 6-years apart in China

BMC Geriatrics Feb 01, 2020

Duan J, Lv YB, Gao X, et al. - Considering stratification by educational levels, researchers assessed the differences in links of cognitive impairment with all-cause mortality in two cohorts ascertained 6 years apart in China. They also focused on the link of cognitive impairment with death in distinct age and gender groups. From the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, 13,906 and 13,873 Chinese elderly aged 65 years and older were involved in the 2002–2008 and 2008–2014 cohorts. Family members or relatives of participants were interrogated to ascertain mortality data. Findings revealed an increased risk of mortality in relation to cognitive impairment assessed by different cut-offs, this observation was particularly true among those aged 65–79 years in the two cohorts; this supports periodic screening for cognitive impairment among the elderly.
