Association of clinical markers with disease progression in patients with vitiligo from China
JAMA Jan 28, 2020
Zhang L, Chen S, Kang Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cohort study to assess the utility of trichrome sign, confetti-like depigmentation, and Koebner phenomenon in evaluating disease progression, severity, and prognosis in patients with vitiligo. From September 1, 2016, to May 13, 2019, 425 individuals (mean [SD] age, 30.9 [10.2] years) with vitiligo who completed a 12-month follow-up were selected from the outpatient department of Huashan Hospital, Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Compared with the cohort without any marker at the baseline examination and at a 3-month follow-up, the proportion of patients in the active stage was significantly higher in the cohort with clinical markers. In addition, presence of clinical markers was linked to disease progression at 1- and 3-month follow-up. The results indicate that clinical markers, including trichrome sign, confetti-like depigmentation, and Koebner phenomenon, are linked to vitiligo progression and prognosis and may need more intensive treatment for patients with multiple clinical markers.
