Association of clinical factors with symptomatic recurrence of idiopathic subglottic stenosis
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jun 27, 2019
Menapace DC, et al. - In this retrospective medical record review involving 186 adult patients (mean age was 49 years), researchers described the clinical factors of patients with idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS), including body mass index (BMI, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared), and assessed their connection with iSGS symptomatic recurrence. Compared to underweight or normal-weight patients, those with class 1 obesity (but not class 2 or 3) exhibited a shorter time to first symptomatic recurrence iSGS. Increasing body mass index was associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes mellitus but not with symptomatic recurrence of iSGS on multivariable analysis. Overall, the authors concluded that patients with class 1 obesity were more prone to iSGS symptomatic recurrence in comparison to those with underweight and normal weight. Class 2 or class 3 obesity did not show this connection. Class 1 obesity patients should be advised about this risk to assist in symptom assessment and management.
