Association of clinical and demographic factors with the severity of palmoplantar pustulosis
JAMA Dermatology Sep 19, 2020
Benzian-Olsson N, Dand N, Chaloner C, et al. - In a cross-sectional study involving 203 UK patients (43 men [21%], 160 women [79%]; median age at onset, 48 [interquartile range (IQR), 38-59] years), researchers sought to investigate the factors correlated with palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) severity. Compared with men, the Palmoplantar Pustulosis Psoriasis Area Severity Index score was significantly higher in women and in current smokers vs former and never smokers. Both of such findings were replicated in an independently ascertained, Northern European cohort including 159 individuals. Findings suggested that smoking cessation interventions can be beneficial in patients with PPP and should be examined in clinical studies. Therefore, smoking cessation intervention could be helpful. Early-onset disease, female sex, and smoking status were associated with PPP severity.
