Association of CKD with incident tuberculosis
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Jul 10, 2019
Park S, et al. - Using the National Health Insurance Database of Korea, researchers focused on the link between predialysis CKD and active Mycobacterium tuberculosis risks in a nation with moderate Mycobacterium tuberculosis risk. Individuals with preexisting active Mycobacterium tuberculosis or kidney replacement therapy were excluded from this nationwide retrospective cohort study. Overall, 408,873 people with predialysis CKD and the same number of controls (without CKD, matched for age, sex, low-income status, and smoking history) were included. They reported a higher incidence of active Mycobacterium tuberculosis in people with predialysis CKD compared to those without predialysis CKD in the Korean population. Old age, men, current smoking, low income, underlying diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes CKD stage 1 (eGFR≥90 ml/min per 1.73 m2 with persistent albuminuria) or stage 4/5 without dialysis (eGFR<30 ml/min per 1.73 m2) were identified as the factors that conferred risk for active Mycobacterium tuberculosis among the predialysis CKD group.
