Association of cereal, gluten, and dietary fiber intake with islet autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes

JAMA Pediatrics Oct 13, 2019

Hakola L, Miettinen ME, Syrjälä E, et al. - In this investigation, researchers examined the correlations of cereal, gluten, and dietary fiber intake with the development of islet autoimmunity (IA) and type 1 diabetes (T1D). The study sample consisted of children (n = 6,081) with genetic susceptibility to T1D from September 1996 to September 2004 from two university hospitals in Finland and followed up every 3 to 12 months up to 6 years for diet, islet autoantibodies, and T1D. Based on joint models, the risk of developing IA was linked to the intake of oats, wheat, rye, gluten-containing cereals, gluten without avenin from oats, gluten with avenin, and dietary fiber. The risk of developing T1D was associated with the intake of oats and rye. The correlations with IA remained statistically significant after multiple testing correction.
