Association of cataract surgery with traffic crashes
JAMA Oct 10, 2018
Schlenker MB, et al. - In this population-based study of 559,546 subjects who received at least 1 eye cataract surgery, researchers conducted a comprehensive longitudinal analysis testing whether cataract surgery is related to a reduction in serious traffic crashes where the patient was the driver. Findings suggested an association of cataract surgery with a modest reduction in a patient’s subsequent risk of a serious traffic crash as a driver, which has potential implications for mortality, morbidity, and costs to society. They observed that patients with younger age, a history of a crash, more emergency visits, and frequent outpatient physician visits had a higher risk of subsequent traffic crashes.
