Association of cardiovascular disease with respiratory disease
Journal of the American College of Cardiology May 03, 2019
Carter P, et al. - In this cohort study that included 31,646 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), 60,424 asthma, and 1,662 interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients from 7 National Health Service hospitals across the North West of England, researchers examined the link between COPD, asthma, and ILD, and individual cardiovascular diseases. They also assessed how all-cause mortality in respiratory conditions may be influenced by individual cardiovascular diseases. Age- and sex-matched control groups were also included. Findings revealed an independent association of lung disease with cardiovascular diseases, especially ischemic heart disease and heart failure, which were shown to have a significant contribution to all-cause mortality. However, the probability of receiving coronary revascularization was less likely in patients with lung disease.
