Association of caloric intake from sugar-sweetened beverages with water intake among US children and young adults in the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
JAMA Pediatrics Jun 11, 2019
Rosinger AY, et al. - Because it is uncertain how water consumption is associated with the caloric intake of children from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in daily life, researchers ascertained if the number of calories and percentage of total energy intake from SSBs varies among US children by water intake status on a given day. SSBs add empty calories to the diets of children and may boost the risk of gaining weight, obesity, and diabetes. Replacing water with SSBs may decrease the total energy intake. In addition, school-based interventions to displace SSBs were correlated with reduced body mass index by increasing water access.
