Association of brain cortical changes with relapse in patients with major depressive disorder
JAMA Psychiatry Apr 03, 2018
Zaremba D, et al. - Given that more than half of all patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) experience a relapse within 2 years after recovery, researchers here investigated if relapse in major depressive disorder is associated with morphologic brain changes assessed using structural magnetic resonance imaging. A longitudinal design and a multimethodological approach revealed a distinct association of relapse in MDD with brain morphologic features. They recognized cortical changes from baseline to follow-up which affected brain structures that are crucial for regulation of emotions and needed to be prevented. Findings thus suggested a negative association of relapse with morphologic brain alterations.
