Association of bone conduction devices for single-sided sensorineural deafness with QOL
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Oct 20, 2021
Hampton T, Milinis K, Whitehall E, et al. - Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB) and the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ) could demonstrate greater sensitivity for detecting the changes induced by hearing interventions, relative to the Health Utilities Index–3 (HUI-3).
This is a systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 studies with 203 adult patients with single-sided sensorineural deafness, to determine the association of bone conduction devices (BCDs) on quality of life (QOL) in these patients.
Hearing-specific QOL was evaluated with the APHAB and the SSQ and generic QOL with the HUI-3.
The global APHAB and SSQ showed significant improvements, which were not seen in the HUI-3.
This implies that improvements in hearing-specific QOL measures but not in generic QOL measures could be observed in adult patients who receive BCDs.
