Association of biological markers of alcohol consumption and self-reported drinking with hippocampal volume in a population-based sample of adults
Alcohol and Alcoholism Jun 26, 2018
Naglich A, et al. - Relationships between indicators of alcohol consumption and hippocampal volume was explored examining a large community cohort. On analyzing a total of 1848 adults with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and alcohol consumption data, there appeared significant associations between drinks per week and right hippocampal volume in participants with Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR) scores <11 and in those aged ≥50 years. Participants aged ≥50 but not <50 years demonstrated a significant association between aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and right and left hippocampal volume. Hence suggesting that non-depressed and older adults exhibit association of alcohol use indicators with right hippocampal volume.
