Association of behavior in boys from low socioeconomic neighborhoods with employment earnings in adulthood
JAMA Pediatrics Feb 15, 2019
Vergunst F, et al. - In this 30-year follow-up study of 920 boys, researchers tested the relationship between kindergarten teacher–rated assessments of inattention, hyperactivity, opposition, aggression, and prosociality in boys with employment earnings at the age of 35 to 36, as measured by government tax return data. In kindergarten boys from low socioeconomic neighborhoods, teacher ratings of inattention and prosociality are correlated with earnings in adulthood after adjustment for hyperactivity, aggression, and opposition, which were not related to earnings. Findings suggested that interventions starting in kindergarten that targets the inattention of boys and enhances prosociality could positively impact workforce integration and earnings.
