JAMA Jan 25, 2018

Jakobsen GS, et al. - Herein, authors undertook a comparative exploration of the changes in obesity-related comorbidities in patients with severe obesity (body mass index ≥40 or ≥35 and at least 1 comorbidity) undergoing bariatric surgery or specialized medical treatment. In comparison with medical treatment, bariatric surgery exhibited a connection with a clinically significant increased risk for complications, as well as lower risks of obesity-related comorbidities among patients with severe obesity followed up for a median of 6.5 years. Data recommended the consideration of the risk for complications in the decision-making process.
