Association of audiometric age-related hearing loss with depressive symptoms in Hispanic individuals

JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Dec 10, 2018

Golub JS, et al. - Authors evaluated if a cross-sectional association exists between objective audiometric hearing loss and depressive symptoms in older Hispanic adults. Findings suggested an association of objective hearing loss with clinically significant depressive symptoms in older Hispanic people, greater hearing loss seems to be associated with greater odds of having depressive symptoms. In view of the high prevalence of untreated hearing loss in older adults, they noted a probability of hearing loss to be a potentially modifiable risk factor for late-life depression.
