Association of atopic dermatitis with sleep quality in children
JAMA Pediatrics May 09, 2019
Ramirez FD, et al. - In this longitudinal cohort study involving 13,988 children, researchers determined if children with active atopic dermatitis (AD) had impaired the duration and quality of their sleep at multiple points throughout their childhood and if the severity of the disease had an effect on sleep outcomes using data of children enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. Investigators found that children with more severe active illness and with comorbid asthma or allergic rhinitis had a poorer quality of sleep. Even children with mild AD or inactive AD, however, had significantly increased odds of impaired sleep quality statistically. Findings revealed that atopic dermatitis seemed to be associated throughout childhood with impaired sleep quality. Clinicians should, therefore, consider sleep quality among all children with AD, especially those with comorbid asthma or allergic rhinitis and severe disease, and interventions are needed to improve sleep quality.
