Association of aspirin with prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients after total knee arthroplasty compared with other anticoagulants: A noninferiority analysis
JAMA Jan 22, 2019
Hood BR, et al. - In this retrospective cohort, 41,537 cases of mean age, 65.8 years were studied to examine the acceptability of aspirin alone vs anticoagulant prophylaxis for decreasing the risk of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) in subjects undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between April 1, 2013, and October 31, 2015. They observed VTE event in 573 candidates. Only aspirin was noticed noninferior for the composite VTE outcome as compared to those receiving other chemoprophylaxis. Bleeding was reported in 10 of 668 without prophylaxis, 116 of 12,831 in the aspirin group, 258 of 22,620 with anticoagulation, and 73 of 5418 of those receiving both. Hence, the use of aspirin was suggestive for bleeding complications.
