Association of arterial stiffness with incident atrial fibrillation: A cohort study
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders May 28, 2021
Almuwaqqat Z, Norby FL, Lutsey PL, et al. - Whether there exists an association of carotid femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV; a measure of central arterial stiffness) with incident atrial fibrillation (AF), was inquired in this study. Among 3882 participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Cohort Study without prevalent AF, measurements of cfPWV were obtained in 2011–2013. To ascertain AF incidence, participants were observed through 2017. The study sample had a mean age of 75 years (SD 5), 60% were female and 20% were African American. A median follow-up of 5.5 years revealed 331 incident cases of AF. Findings demonstrated that low and high central arterial stiffness was related to the risk of AF in community-dwelling older adults.
