Association of appendicular lean mass, and subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue with mortality in older Brazilians: The São Paulo Ageing & Health Study
Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Jun 20, 2019
de Santana FM, et al. - In a cohort of elderly subjects, researchers studied the connection between body composition by DXA and mortality. At baseline, 839 community-dwelling subjects ≥ 65 years of age were evaluated by DXA through a questionnaire, analysis of clinical information, laboratory examinations, and body composition. Only low muscle mass (LMM) was a predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular death among females. According to findings, LMM ascertained by appendicular lean mass adjusted by itself for fat and fat mass if correlated with the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in older people. Visceral and subcutaneous fat have opposite roles in elderly men's mortality risk. DXA may, therefore, be a promising instrument for estimating the danger of death among elderly people.
