Association of apical periodontitis with cardiovascular disease via noninvasive assessment of endothelial function and subclinical atherosclerosis
Journal of Endodontics May 02, 2019
Chauhan N, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers studied whether there is an association between apical periodontitis (AP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) using noninvasive methods (ie, flow-mediated dilatation [FMD] and carotid intima-media thickness [c-IMT]). The study sample consisted of 120 men between 20 and 40 years old free from periodontal disease, CVD, and traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Using the Mann-Whitney U test and the Spearman rank correlation (rs) test, data were analyzed. Compared to healthy controls, FMD was found to be significantly impaired in AP patients. In addition, the investigation shows statistically significant differences between c-IMT of the AP and control groups. A significant inverse correlation was observed between c-IMT and FMD. In subjects with AP, impaired FMD and increased c-IMT suggest a potential association between endodontic infection and CVD.
