Association of apathy with risk of incident dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Oct 10, 2018
van Dalen JW, et al. - Researchers explored the link between apathy in older people without dementia and incident dementia in this systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 studies including 7365 subjects. In memory clinic patients, apathy was related to an approximately 2-fold increased risk of dementia. They suggest apathy as a relevant, cheap, noninvasive, and easily measurable marker of increased risk of incident dementia with high clinical relevance, especially because these vulnerable patients may forgo health care.
