Association of aortic aneurysms and dissections with subarachnoid hemorrhage
Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 19, 2019
Al-Kawaz M, et al. - Using claims data from a nationally representative 5% sample of Medicare beneficiaries, researchers investigated the link of aortic diseases, such as aneurysm and dissection, with nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), using Cox proportional hazards analysis and adjusting for demographics, vascular risk factors, and Charlson comorbidities. A documented aortic aneurysm or dissection was identified in 32,551 (1.8%) of overall 1,781,917 beneficiaries. The development of a nontraumatic SAH was reported in 2,538 patients (0.14%) over an observation period of 4.6 ± 2.2 years. In those with aortic aneurysm/dissection vs in those without aortic aneurysm/dissection, the observed SAH incidence was 9 (95% CI, 7–11) per 10,000 patients per year vs 3 (95% CI, 3–3) per 10,000 patients per year, respectively. Following adjustment for demographics, stroke risk factors, and Charlson comorbidities, an increased risk of SAH was found in patients with aortic aneurysm/dissection. Overall, a link of aortic aneurysm/dissection with an increased risk of nontraumatic SAH was evident in this study population.
