Association of antipsychotic polypharmacy vs monotherapy with psychiatric rehospitalization among adults with schizophrenia
JAMA Psychiatry Feb 25, 2019
Tiihonen J, et al. - Researchers sought for the specific antipsychotic combinations that are superior to monotherapies in the maintenance treatment of schizophrenia by conducting this cohort study on 62,250 individuals with schizophrenia with up to 20-year follow-up. The findings revealed slightly lower risk of psychiatric rehospitalization in correlation with antipsychotic polypharmacy than monotherapy, in general, though not all types of polypharmacy are beneficial. The best outcome was achieved with clozapine plus aripiprazole combination, with 14% to 23% reduced risk of rehospitalization than clozapine alone, which was the monotherapy correlated with the best outcomes.
