Association of age, sex and BMI with the rate of change in tibial cartilage volume: A 10.7-year longitudinal cohort study
Arthritis Research & Therapy Dec 19, 2019
Cai G, et al. - In this 10.7-year longitudinal cohort study, 481 individuals (49% female, 49% with knee pain and 58% radiographic osteoarthritis) were involved in order to explain the relationship of age, gender, and BMI with the rate of change of tibial knee cartilage volume over 10.7 years in a community-based sample of elderly people. In both men and women, tibial cartilage volume decreased at a quicker rate with rising age and BMI, especially in the medial compartment. Moreover, on the contrary to the low rate of change in radiographs, findings imply that cartilage loss at the tibia is widespread in this age group.
