Association of age-related macular degeneration with risk of all-cause and specific-cause mortality in the national health and nutrition examination survey, 2005 to 2008
JAMA Mar 20, 2019
Zhu Z, et al. - Researchers investigated whether age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is associated with risk of all-cause and specific-cause mortality in this population-based prospective cohort study that included 5,603 participants aged ≥ 40 years who responded to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the 2005-2008 phase. They found that only late AMD was associated with more than a doubling of all-cause mortality and more than three-fold higher risk of mortality due to causes other than cardiovascular disease and cancer. Late AMD may, therefore, be a marker of biological aging. Alternatively, unmeasured or inadequately assessed confounding factors for late AMD may explain this association.
