Association of adrenal venous sampling with outcomes in primary aldosteronism for unilateral adenomas
JAMA Surgery Feb 14, 2021
Thiesmeyer JW, Ullmann TM, Stamatiou AT, et al. - This retrospective, international cohort study was undertaken to determine if clinical and biochemical resolution differed for patients with primary aldosteronism with unilateral adenomas who underwent adrenal venous sampling vs those who proceeded to surgery based on imaging alone. In total, 125 patients (45 cross-sectional imaging with adrenal venous sampling and 80 imaging only) were involved in the analysis. Given the improved sensitivity of cross-sectional imaging in adrenal tumor detection, adrenal venous sampling can be conducted selectively without affecting outcomes in suitable patients with clearly visualized unilateral adenomas. This can encourage improved access to surgical care for aldosterone-producing adenomas and will reduce the incidence of procedural-related morbidities.
