Association of adiposity with thyroid nodules: A cross-sectional study of a healthy population in Beijing, China
BMC Endocrine Disorders Oct 24, 2019
Yang HX, et al. - The research was conducted among healthy residents in Beijing, at Beijing Rehabilitation Hospital between January 1, 2017, and March 3, 2019, to explore the connection between thyroid nodules (TNs) and adiposity. The authors compared BMI and visceral fat area (VFA) to determine the better indicator of TNs risk. Using thyroid ultrasonography, visceral fat and anthropometric measurements, laboratory tests and questionnaire interview, 3,534 healthy people were examined. Data reported that 58.69% of the patients had TNs. Findings suggested an association of adiposity with TNs. Elevated VFA is correlated more strongly with higher risk of TNs than with BMI, possibly serving as a potential indicator of risk of TNs. It may be helpful to maintain normal VFA to avoid the appearance of TNs, particularly in women.
