Association of acyl carnitines and mortality in out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrest patients: Results of a prospective observational study
Journal of Critical Care Apr 15, 2020
Widmer M, Thommen EB, Becker C, et al. - In view of the association of Acyl Carnitines (AC) with adverse outcome in cardiac arrest patients, researchers examined how different AC species associate with mortality and neurological outcome in a cohort of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. In this prospective observational study, 281 OHCA patients were included upon admission to the intensive care unit. Among these, 137 (48.8%) died within 30 days. Among the 144 survivors (51.2%), poor neurological outcome was reported in 15 (10.4%). While there was association of several ACs with mortality, AC C2 had the highest prognostic value for mortality and neurological outcome. Findings thereby suggest the value of Acyl Carnitines as a novel marker that might allow risk stratification in clinical care.
