Association of acute venous thromboembolism with in-hospital outcomes of coronary artery bypass graft surgery
Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 27, 2019
Panhwar MS, Ginwalla M, Kalra A, et al. - Using a large national inpatient database, researchers examined the postoperative incidence and outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients. To identify all patients > 18 years of age who underwent CABG (without concomitant valvular procedures), and had venous thromboembolism (VTE) during the hospital stay, the 2013 to 2014 National Inpatient Sample were utilized. Findings suggested an association of VTE with higher incidence of inpatient mortality and complications. In addition, VTE was linked to higher cost and longer length of stay. Analysis of > 330,000 CABG procedures indicates that although postoperative VTE is uncommon after CABG, it is correlated with increased morbidity and mortality. The identification of ideal approaches for VTE prophylaxis in these patients requires randomized controlled trials.
