Association between weight loss and spontaneous changes in physical inactivity in overweight/obese individuals with knee osteoarthritis: An eight-week prospective cohort study

Arthritis Care & Research Mar 04, 2020

Bartholdy C, Christensen R, Kristensen LE, et al. - The present study was conducted to evaluate spontaneous variations in time spent being physically inactive that is measured continuously by accelerometry during an 8-week weight-loss intervention in overweight/obese individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Researchers performed an observational cohort study recruiting individuals from an OA outpatient clinic who were concomitantly overweight/obese and had symptomatic knee OA. A sum of 124 individuals were included in this study. There was no statistically significant change in the average daily time spent inactive from baseline to follow-up. In knee OA symptoms, physical inactivity remains stable notwithstanding a clinically significant weight loss and improvements. Variation in inactivity does not appear to occur spontaneously, implying that focused efforts to reduce inactive behaviors are required.
