Association between visual field damage and gait dysfunction in patients with glaucoma

JAMA Ophthalmology Jul 29, 2021

Jian-Yu E, Mihailovic A, Garzon C, et al. - In this post hoc analysis involving 241 candidates, researchers sought to compare 3-year longitudinal changes in gait measures across the spectrum of baseline visual field (VF) damage in glaucoma. During the study year, each participant walked back and forth on an electronic walkway twice at a normal pace. When comparing longitudinal gait changes over 3 years across the spectrum of integrated VF sensitivity, each 5-unit (dB) decrement was linked to more rapid declines in stride velocity and cadence. Patients with glaucoma in this study showed an exacerbated decline in walking speeds (ie, stride velocity and cadence) at worse levels of baseline VF damage, demonstrating that mobility speeds fall quicker in older persons with glaucoma.
