Association between uterine contractions before elective caesarean section and transient tachypnoea of the newborn: A retrospective cohort study

BMJ Open Mar 20, 2020

Shinohara S, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study of 464 women who underwent elective caesarean section, the correlation between the presence of predelivery uterine contractions and transient tachypnoea of the newborn (TTN) was examined. This study was conducted between January 2011 and May 2019 at National Hospital Organization Kofu National Hospital. TTN was reported in 9.9% of patients (46/464), and no uterine contraction was reported in 38.4% (178/464) of patients. An increased risk of TTN was observed in significant correlation with the absence of uterine contractions after controlling for gestational diabetes mellitus, small for gestational age, male sex and caesarean section at 37 weeks. Outcomes suggest that accurate risk stratification using cardiotocogram could aid in the management of infants who are at risk of developing TTN.
