Association between use of enhanced recovery after surgery protocol and postoperative complications in colorectal surgery: The Postoperative Outcomes Within Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocol (POWER) study
JAMA May 15, 2019
Ripollés-Melchor J, et al. - For evaluation of whether Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) improves results in elective colorectal surgery patients, a multicentric, prospective cohort study including 2,084 adults scheduled for elective colorectal surgery, of whom 1,286 were males, with a mean age of 68 years, were included between September 15 and December 15, 2017. Those presenting with postoperative complications totaled 879, whereas 566 patients were experiencing moderate to severe complications. In the ERAS group, the number of patients with moderate to severe complication was low. There appeared an association of increased ERAS adherence with decreased postoperative complications, so a high adherence rate to the ERAS protocol is recommended in the management of care for patients undergoing colorectal surgery.
