Association between urologic malignancies and end-stage renal disease: A meta-analysis
Nephrology Dec 20, 2018
Kompotiatis P, et al. - In this meta-analysis of 19 observational studies including 1,931,073 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), researchers analyzed the pooled incidence/incidence trends and risk of urologic malignancies in patients with ESRD. They identified relevant studies via a search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases from inception through April 2017. Eligible studies reported on the incidence or odds ratios of urologic malignancies among ESRD patients. Using a random-effect model, pooled odds ratios and 95% CI were calculated. Analysis of data revealed pooled estimated incidence rates of 0.4% and 0.5% for kidney cancer and urothelial cancers (carcinomas of the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis), respectively. This analysis demonstrated a significant link between ESRD and urologic malignancies. Data also revealed a significant positive correlation between the incidence of urologic malignancies and year of study.
