Association between uric acid, renal haemodynamics and arterial stiffness over the natural history of type 1 diabetes

Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Apr 04, 2019

Lytvyn Y, et al. - In this post hoc analysis, researchers studied the connection between normal plasma uric acid (PUA) levels, renal haemodynamic function, arterial stiffness and plasma renin and aldosterone in adolescents, young adults and older adults over a wide range of type 1 diabetes (T1D) durations. In older adults with long-standing T1D, the relationship between higher PUA with lower GFR, increased arterial stiffness and renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) activation was observed. Findings suggested that T1D duration might alter the relationship between PUA, renal haemodynamic function and RAAS activation, resulting in renal vasoconstriction and ischaemia.
